The famous lengthy autumn dinners are an integral part of French culture and is there any better way to experience them than with great wines and hearty food in a friendly atmosphere?

When asked to put a name to our dinner Loic, our MC for the dinner, who grew up in Brittany and crafted his winemaking talent in Bordeaux said straight out “gerbaude”. At the end of vintage in Bordeaux there is a communal dinner to celebrate called gerbaude. Loic is celebrating the end of the Australian vintage having been spotted working in Tasmania, Yarra Valley, Mount Macedon and elsewhere. For the rest of us, I suspect we will be celebrating just getting through the hard part of the week in our continuing toil to enhance the most livable landmass on the globe.



French language is the repository of French Culture and that culture is the key to unlocking French language but if you put “gerbaude” into google translate it is not there. A word without translation! In the spirit of the cinema classic “The Castle” the nuance of this word is spread all across France celebrated at different times under different names often similar to “gerbaude” sometimes not. It crops up in Normandy, the lower valley of the Dordogne, Auvergne, Perigord and so on. It is a Festive meal that aggregates the community and fulfills a need to share together after working together. Gerbaude is a meal that marks time passing and moving on to new phases. There is no need to get too deep it will be a good meal to enjoy, that is all we really need to know!
