Château Montrevel (Bordeaux Supérieur) 2014: Made from the fruit of 35-year old Merlot vines, a very limited production of just 2,000 bottles. Vinified in small cement cuves, then malolactic and an élevage lasting 23 months in 100% new oak barrels. A bright crimson rim around a black tulip core to this wine, and enticing aromatics of rose petals, smoked blackcurrant, and black raspberry, and although there are some oak spices here it is nicely blanketed by the fruit. This also seems to be the case on the palate, which maintains a supple and succulent style, with intense cigar smoke, ripe blackcurrant and a herby edge of bay leaf. Very focused, with succulent acid and a grained tannic structure supporting admirable substance through the middle and finish, peppery and firm. This should go some distance in the cellar.  92/100 (January 2018)

    CHATEAU MONTREVEL 2014 (January 2018)

This is a very smart Bordeaux Supérieur from Domaine Serisier. 100% merlot with fruit grown in Cadillac en Fronsadais near Libourne on Bordeaux’s right bank, this wine has restrained and savoury aromas of redcurrants and dried fruit. Resembling a Saint-Èmilion in style, the palate is medium bodied, with well-handled cedar characters (its 100% new oak is devoured by the fruit and seemed much less), medium alcohol (13.5%), and is quite youthful and tannic in a way that merlot only achieves when attended to properly. The length on the finish is subtle and quite long. This is a very good release that drinks well now, but will improve further with time in the cellar.  Rating: Very Good.

A beautifully deep, almost black colour with purple hue. Mocha and cocoa dominate at first on the nose, the result of an impressive 23 months maturation in 100% new French oak barrels. The coffee roasting flavours marry perfectly with the mulberry along with rich and ripe plum characters. The wine is still very young, the aromas will refine and find their place given some time.

On the palate, the wine is very promising. At this stage, the plum and blackberry notes dominate, the tannins are ripe and present to support the medium-full bodied wine. This is 100% Merlot at its fleshiest, yet not overripe. The prospect for this wine over the next 5 to 10 years is very exciting, certainly one to watch.

"The nose is firm the start of the palate concentrated with a rich mix of black fruits. Under the tannic structure there is sweetness ripe plums and liquorice dark chocolate at the back but it closes down at the moment on the finish a bit tight the tannins firm but ripe."
