Since 2002 when the Fabre family took over Château d’Anglès they have succeeded in revealing the true potential of this vineyard, and now have a range of award-winning wines to show for their enthusiasm and commitment. With a lifetime in wine making, Eric Fabre’s career includes eight years as Technical Director of the world-renowned Château Lafite Rothschild. It was however, a lifelong dream to own a vineyard on the Mediterranean, so 2001 saw Eric and his wife Christine seduced by the Château d’Anglès. The beautiful ancient stone ‘mas’ farmhouse of Château d’Anglès overlooks the vines that slope gently down to the shores of the Mediterranean.
“Respect for the environment, an impressive winemaking heritage and the sheer quality of
the wines are the ‘driving forces’ behind the label”
Neil Sommerfelt, Master of Wine
Deep red colour with hints of black. Complex bouquet with a blend of ripe red and black fruits, spices, liquorice and tobacco flavours highlighted by the typical minty touch of La Clape. Full-bodied and elegant mouth structured by dense and remarkably silky tannins. Great length endowed with a nice freshness.
|Grape Variety||Mourvedre 55%, Syrah 30% Grenache 10%, Carignan 5%|
|Food Pairing||Wonderful with game and red meat. Try it with a serious T-bone!|
|Service||Decant for a few hours and serve at 18°C/60°F|
Total de-stemming, juice is gravity-fed into vats, traditional temperature-controlled fermentation. Very long maceration (50 days) with no trituration so as to extract only the finest elements.
Syrah and mourvedre are blended then nursed in 3-4 year old barrels for 10 months. Grenache is aged in vat to preserve its fruit. Natural stabilisation, static clarification by gravity, no fining or filtrating.
|Soil/Vines||Hard limestone of the mountain of La Clape. Warm and dry climate tempered by the Mediterranean. Slow ripening thanks to cooler nights on the shores of the sea. Sustainable practices according to ASCERT charter for respect of the environment and complexity of the wine: composted pomace amendment, crushed unwanted shootes, plowing, biodegradable sprays, no insecticides.|
|Harvest||Two-months-long picking according to maturity of each variety, grapes are hand-selected.|
|Region||La Clape, Languedoc|
|Ageing Potential||Fresh and fruity when young, gaining more complexity after 5-10 years.
Potential of 15-20 years.
“Elegant and fresh. Silky, integrated tannins... wild herbs notes. Long, mouthwatering finish.”
“Full-throated, gently-oaked blend with a strong marine accent from La Clape”
"Deep in the glass-expect something slightly formidable. Expressive but contrite, dried herbs, aromas of the hills not wine grapes, smells are in sync with its environment, no variety is dominating. There is nothing more to neither prove nor sniff now that it has your interest, just drink.
Well, think about the palate first. A wine with front, look to see it coming because here is some real texture. A wine with body, an insult to the mouth until the tremor subsides. Mourvedre talking, but slowly slipping away from the effects of syrah, and finally the grenache creates silk. Just nice to drink for 40% mourvedre, 40% syrah, 20% grenache. A Languedoucienne marvel, high value, made by a man who once fiddled with cabernet (in Bordeaux). Drinkers - enjoy the effect of low cropping in the glass, the black fruits of mourvedre and a grand wine articulating its terroir.
This is outstanding; just so together."
Peter Scudamore-Smith, MW, June 2014
“Mourvedre 40%, Syrah 40%, Grenache 20%- listed in order as per bottle, and in my own order of preference. Peppery, ripe blackberry, bit of spicy high end pencilly Bordeaux-style oak. Medium bodied, sweet bramble fruit, spice, and a little of that specific regional dried herb perfume, along with a little warmth and a good finish. Tannin comes through and shapes the finish. Nice wine.”
